The 5 S methodology is a Japanese decades-old lean manufacturing technique that helps focus and thinking in order to be more efficient but also to eliminate wasted time and space. |
Engineered to improve your fixed operations, here’s how Metalia’s product line embodies every step on the popular 5 S methodology. |
The 5s methodology refers to five organizational steps that are to be done in order :
The first step is to eliminate any tool or equipment that is not in use in order to save time, space and labour costs, while enhancing productivity. It also includes effective waste removal.
For workshops and maintenance department, Metalia offers open base storage cabinet allowing easy storage of used oil receivers after use. To eliminate trash bins from the shop floor, Metalia offers a drawer especially designed for trash and waste recycling.
The second step is to organize necessary items so they are ready to use and easily accessible.
Metalia workbenches are designed with personalized drawers and storage units to store efficiently all the tools and equipment the modern technician needs. Custom-cut foam are available to push the 5 S methodology even further. This step is the solution to make a smooth and easy workflow but also to maintain safety.
The third step involves the behaviour of the worker. After organizing their workplace, workers have to clean it and their service equipment on a regular schedule to maintain efficiency, reduce downtime and prevent injuries.
Metalia uses stainless steel countertops on every workbench for easier maintenance and cleaning. Furthermore, LED lighting over the work surface increases the productivity with a perfectly lit work area. Employees will feel more comfortable in this clean and uncluttered environment, which will lead to improved sense of belonging and employee retention.
The fourth step involves the creation of procedures (schedules, lists, charts…) in order to repeat the three previous steps and to keep the best practices in all the work area.
Metalia workbenches are chosen to standardize to performance and the image, whether it is on multiple work shift or amongst to different branches of a same business.
The final step of 5 S methodology is certainly the most challenging : to maintain the standard set and to continue the process of improvement. This philosophy fosters self-motivated discipline in the members of the organization.
